Krishnanagar Member of Parliament Mahua Moitra faced severe harassment after an angry crowd targeted her with mud, dung, and eggs during an administrative meeting in Kaliganj. The incident unfolded at the private residence of Kaliganj MLA Alifa Ahmed, where protesters gathered outside on the street, waved black flags, and began pelting the property. The items were hurled directly through the windows of the house, disrupting the meeting. Moitra documented the entire ordeal using her mobile phone and streamed the attack via a Facebook Live broadcast, vocally criticizing local law enforcement officers for standing by passively as the chaotic scene escalated.

This latest assault marks the continuation of a controversial post-poll trend in West Bengal, colloquially dubbed "egg therapy," which initially began when senior Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Abhishek Banerjee faced public anger and egg pelting in Sonarpur while visiting a deceased worker's family. Since then, the practice has spread across the state, with crowds frequently targeting small, medium, and high-profile TMC leaders, including veteran MP Saugata Roy. Moitra herself previously drew intense public scrutiny and an FIR at the Hoglaberia police station after controversially advising individuals to hide their identities under burqas while throwing eggs.

The systemic rise of these unusual public demonstrations has already drawn serious judicial scrutiny from the state's highest legal authority. Just a day prior to the Kaliganj attack, a Calcutta High Court division bench consisting of Justice Tapobrata Chakraborty and Justice Parthasarathy Chatterjee held a hearing on a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed against the "egg therapy" trend. The bench directed the West Bengal government to file an affidavit detailing the total number of such recorded incidents and mandated the creation of strict guidelines and social awareness programs to curb this growing public menace.
